For me, a true friend will never, ever leave you no matter what happens! It’s not important whether she/he is miles apart from you, as a true friend will always have you in his heart forever. So distance should really not matter. They don't lie to you no matter what. They also keep their promises. They also don't stab you in the back.
A true friend will always believe in you even though you no longer believe in yourself. She/He will always bring out the best in you.
A true friend is like your other self. She/He will be your best and worst critic as he will always tell you the truth, though he knows it will sometimes hurt you. At least she/he is always honest.

And most of all, a true friend is someone who is willing to share her/his TIME with you. Time shared together has always been imporatant for me, as time is something no one can ever buy nor take back. The moment a person shared his time with you, she/he had already shared a part of her/his life with you.
What you are calling true friend is Best Friend, a person that has known you all your life or a minimum of let’s say five years. No one under that time would I ever consider a true friend. I might be wrong but to be best friends it takes time and experience to know the other inside and out, trust does not happen over night!
That being said, friends have been through hell together nothing will ever come between them that includes marriage of either one they melt into the family. They are siblings in a way that know each other inside and out!
There is a line that friends should never cross concerning their friendship, honesty and truth is a must for a healthy friendship. Without either there can be no trust and with out trust the friendship will not last long. A healthy friendship is one of communication that time and distance can not destroy, any and all communications are a fear free zone because of the trust the friends have!
When giving their word or promise it is unbreakable that is situations do arise that might interfere with a promise again communication is essential to the friendship. When this happens the that must break the promise can only explain why, the one that is effected must also accept the break with grace. Remember best or true friends have no problems that can’t be worked out or forgiven!
I see friendship as standing back to back both facing the world and protecting each other, friends do not let friends get hurt. True or best friends never ever willfully hurts the other, a friend would rather die than hurt or blindside their friend. This is an unforgivable act!
